The need for a group to assist people researching their Clayton County, Iowa, genealogy and history became apparent in the 1970s. The Clayton County Clerk of Court’s Office and the Elkader Public Library were receiving many inquiries, which they needed help in researching and answering inquiries.  For several years this was done with the help of local historians.    An advertisement in all the county newspapers invited those interested in forming a genealogy society to attend a meeting at the Elkader Public Library on 14 July 1982.  A surprising number of people attended and it was voted to indeed form a society.  Past members Oakland and Irene Becker left a bequeath in their estate to the Clayton County Genealogical Society for the purpose of housing all of the Society’s genealogy records and publications in one building for the public to access.  The building was purchased in April 2015 and the Becker Center was opened in October 2015. The Society members and many volunteers have accomplished the phenomenal task of compiling and printing over 30 books so far! A few more books are in the planning.
